Music & Family
For this entry I decided to interview my mother, Marga.
Marga was born in 1970 in Mallorca, Spain, she has 2 sons (my brother and I) aged 17 and 21 and a husband (my father). Marga has lived all her life in Mallorca and when she was young she never had many opportunities to travel, thanks to her and my father today I am able to travel to many places. Thanks to them I am now living in the USA.
My mother has always been a fan of a Spanish musical group called 'Mecano'. I remember that when my mother accompanied me to class she always played some of his songs, at the beginning I didn't like his songs very much but I ended up liking them. The group was formed by singer Ana Torroja and brothers Nacho and José María Cano.
The following interview was done by video call because she is in Spain and I am in the USA I wrote down the questions and answers in a word document: here I leave the interview;
-Me: Has your musical taste changed over the years?
-Mom: I have always liked the music from when I was young more than what is listened to today. I liked and still like the music group 'Mecano', it's my favorite, but I also like 'Shakira' which is more recent.
-Me: How has music changed from before to now?
-Mom: Before we listened to different music here in Spain than what we listen to today, I think the music of yesteryear had more elaborated and beautiful lyrics, nowadays there are songs that only say swear words or nonsense.
-Me: Can you tell us a little bit about the musical group 'Mecano'? Are they still creating songs?
-Mom: Sure! Mecano was a Spanish pop group, pioneers of techno-pop, new wave and wave in Spain, active mainly between 1981 and 1992. It makes me very sad that they don't release any more songs, but I still listen to their old songs every day, I never get tired of it.
-Me: Have you ever had the opportunity to go to one of their live concerts?
-Mom: Yes, and it was one of the best moments of my life. It was in 2009, I was lucky that the band came to Mallorca, I couldn't miss the opportunity to see my favorite band live. I really liked the atmosphere and I must admit that their songs are much more impressive live than in person.
-Me: What is your favorite song of the group and why?
-Mom: My favorite song is 'Cruz de Navajas.' It's my favorite song because I remember they played that song at the club right when I was meeting your father. The song was a great topic of conversation because when it was played I took the opportunity to tell your father how much I like Mecano, your father didn't like the song but he danced to it with me anyway.
Here is my mother's favorite song 'Cruz de Navajas' by Mecano:
It’s really interesting how music tastes vary and change depending on which part of the world you live in. I’m not very familiar with music groups from Spain so it was interesting to learn about some of them. Like your mom, I also like Shakira because I grew up listening to her songs, since she is one of my mom’s favorite singers. In fact we still listen to her music at home today and she is a role model and a really important person in my country.
